Reducing the Potential Threat to Officers with Securus Technologies
Each day that me and my fellow officers comes to work at the jail could be our last. We understand that the prison is a very violent place to work and that if we were to put down our guard for a minute, they inmates would have no trouble making us pay. Reducing the potential threat to me and my fellow officers is of the utmost importance, and we go to great lengths to try and keep everyone as safe as possible in the jail.
When inmates can get their hands on weapons, the stakes just went up because they could use those on other inmates, visitors, or my staff. The only way that the staff can keep weapons out of the hands of the inmates is by making sure they do not come in the jail. The most common way is through the visitor center, and even with the warning of potential jail time if anyone is caught bringing anything illegal into the jail, the problem persists.
If a low-level gang member on the street is told by his leader to bring a weapon to the jail, they do not think twice. In an effort to cut off the flow of those weapons to the prison, we began monitoring the inmates conversations on the phones installed by Securus Technologies. Unlike the traditional phone system, the LBS software gives corrections officers the ability to monitor certain calls based on the conversion. When there is any talk about weapons, we can pinpoint who and what they are talking about.
On a number of occasions already, me and my fellow officers have discovered where inmates were hiding weapons and even how they got them in the jail based on conversations of the inmates. Even if they think they are disguising their conversation, the end result is we have a tool now that reduced the potential threats to our lives.
